Virginia Beach criminal records are maintained through different court systems depending on the case type. General District Court handles criminal misdemeanors and felony preliminary hearings, while Circuit Court handles felony trials and certain misdemeanors originally charged in Circuit Court.
Before requesting copies or certified records, use the Virginia Judicial System Case Information search entry to select the appropriate court level and Virginia Beach locality when available. Retain the court level and case number identified through the search process for the later document request. Online case information availability does not mean every record or document is available online.
For General District criminal matters, contact the Criminal Division at 757-385-4707. For Circuit Court criminal matters, contact the Criminal Department at 757-385-4187.
Choose the court that maintains the case before requesting documents. A hearing entry alone is not a conviction; identify the disposition, sentencing order, or dated filing needed for the record request.
After identifying the General District case, request the specific document needed, such as a certified final disposition or another court document. A case search result and a document request are separate steps.
The Virginia Beach General District Criminal Division provides request instructions for record searches and copies. Request details may include the defendant name or aliases, date of birth, Social Security number where available, sex, race, specific charge, and court date. These details help the custodian locate a record and are not a guarantee that every item is a public search field.
Certified final dispositions are listed at $2 per charge. Additional documents are listed at $0.50 per page in addition to a certified final disposition. Copies of case papers requested before the court date or final disposition are listed at $1 per page for the first two pages and $0.50 per page for additional pages.
Mail requests may be sent to Criminal Division, 2425 Nimmo Parkway, Virginia Beach, VA 23456-9057. The instructions list accepted checks or money orders drawn on a Virginia bank and require a self-addressed stamped envelope. The court estimates research and mail processing at about two weeks.
Virginia Beach Circuit Court criminal records require the correct court-level route. The Criminal Department can be reached at 757-385-4187; this office maintains the court's criminal orders.
Identify the exact document needed, including the case number and document date when available. Confirm whether an ordinary copy or certified copy is required. The Circuit listing supports $0.50 per sheet and $2 per certification of an order; confirm the final request total and payment instructions with the clerk.
The Circuit Court Clerk's published instructions do not accept official information requests, official correspondence, letters or notices, or filings by email or fax. Send official correspondence to Circuit Court Clerk, 2425 Nimmo Parkway, Building 10, Virginia Beach, VA 23456, with the required stamped self-addressed return envelope.
Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court records require a separate distinction. Juvenile records are confidential, while adult criminal cases are public and adult criminal dispositions follow separate access rules.
Adult disposition information can be requested through the clerk process, including by phone at 757-385-4391. Juvenile confidential dispositions are not public dispositions available by phone.
JDR copies follow the court's copy instructions. Requests may use mail, email, or clerk visit routes. Published copies are $1 for the first two pages and $0.50 per page thereafter. Confirm the exact total with the financial department before mailing, include payment and a self-addressed envelope, and use the clerk visit option Monday-Friday 8-4 when appropriate. The court address is 2425 Nimmo Parkway, Building 10A, Virginia Beach, VA 23456. Juvenile inquiries should include appropriate identification when using the clerk visit route.
Current Virginia case information includes adult JDR criminal information. Absence from ordinary online results does not prove that no record exists.
A Virginia Beach police record check, a court record copy, and a statewide criminal history request answer different questions.
The Virginia Beach Police Department local record-check route is a city-only PD150 service. The request uses subject consent, signature and notarization requirements, identity documentation, and the published $15 fee. In-person requests use the Records Unit route at Building 11, 2405 Courthouse Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23456. Bring a government-issued photo ID and one additional ID. Mail requests use the completed PD150, required identification copies, subject name and other names used, date of birth, reason for request, contact information, signed and notarized consent, payment payable to the City of Virginia Beach, and a self-addressed return envelope.
Virginia State Police SP167 is a separate criminal-history request route. Generate and print the ordinary public form, mail one completed request with payment, and complete the required notarization steps: the subject Section 1 signature must be notarized, and an alternate individual or agency recipient signing Section 2 must also complete the required notarization. For the ordinary history product, the approved inventory lists a $15 fee. The SP167 instructions accept business check, certified check or money order payable to Virginia State Police, or Visa/Mastercard; personal checks are not accepted. Use the selected product instructions because the optional combined history/registry product has different support and should not be confused with the specialized $27 program. Current VSP submission information lists CARE, 7700 Midlothian Turnpike, N. Chesterfield, VA 23235; older SP167 instructions list PO Box 85076, so confirm the applicable current instruction version before mailing. Results provide ordinary conviction-name information with separate limits from broader fingerprint-supported information. No-conviction results do not by themselves prove that no arrest record exists. Official estimates are approximately 15 or 15–20 business days after receipt depending on the instruction source; there is no same-day or expedited service. Do not treat a local police check, court copy, or SP167 result as the same product.
